National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal is a chief Dairy Research institution of India. It was originally started as Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying in 1923 at Bangalore. It was expanded and renamed as Imperial Dairy Institute in 1936 and was known as National Dairy Research Institute after independence in 1947. In 1955, NDRI Headquarter was shifted to Karnal.
Karnal is 133 km from Delhi and the Institue is 1 km from Railway Station/Bus Stand. Domestic and international flights to and from Indira Gandhi Airport, Delhi are available.
The Institute has gained expertise in the areas of Processing, Management, Dairy Production, and Human Resource Development. It strives to develop its R&D and HRD programmes to improvise the situation of food security, employment generation, poverty alleviation and economic prosperity.
The institute undertakes research, teaching and extension activities towards dairy development in the country. It conducts basic and applied research to enhance animal productivity, and also to develop cost effective technologies.
Over the past five decades, the Institute has produced more than 2,000 Dairy Diploma holders, 1,174 dairy graduates, 1,903 post-graduates at Masters level and 873 at Doctorate level in different disciplines of Dairying. In B. Tech (Dairy Technology) programme, besides, the classroom teaching, one-year in-plant training in an industrial environment is conducted to provide an opportunity to its students to manage dairy processing jobs in a commercial environment.
The Institute has also been recognized as Centre of Advanced Studies in the disciplines of Animal Genetics & Breeding and Dairy Technology to further strengthen its HRD activities. The institute offers 30 specially designed international training courses which offer contemporary knowledge for addressing issues concerning, animal breeding, feeding, milk processing and marketing.
Alumni of this Institute get respectable designations in dairy industry, and in R&D institutions and universities, both in India and abroad.
The Institute offers well-structured exhaustive courses. The students are very likely to get good jobs in non-dairying firms as well, such as in, medical institutions, finance sector, etc. After completing courses from NDRI, students become capable of setting up their own dairy companies, dealing with dairy products manufacture, dairy equipment design and fabrication, and IT industry.
Under Dairy Processing research, the Institute has developed technologies for manufacturing a range of indigenous dairy products like khoa and khoa-based sweets, chhana and chhana-based sweets, srikhand, rabri, paneer, long-life lassi, etc. Recent developments in Biotechnology has created new possibilities in Dairy Production and Processing.
